Vanitas
Vanitas is a style of still life painting conceived in the early 17th Century Netherlands. The artists thoughtfully chose each object they painted, as everything pictured is symbolic of the ephemerality of life and the inevitability of death. At the same time that Vanitas Style was thriving, trade with East and Southeast Asia and India was becoming more prominent. The Chintz, a woodblock floral print made in India, came into fashion in the West. This collection takes inspiration from both of these influential artistic approaches, combining the concept and style of Vanitas still lifes with the aesthetic of a traditional Chintz.
